growing slowly and organically

WEEK 82 - POST 3

Last post of the week.  I just wanted to feature a couple of things that have happened this week.  As mentioned in my last post, I'm working on claiming my own voice (and linking my name to the blog) which is a big step for me.  I'll create an "about" page on my own work that can sit alongside the one for my partner who takes the photos.  And my alma mater reached out about featuring my business on their Entrepreneurship Wall of Recognition for our discipline.  And I said "yes" - another big step!

I still "owe" about six more hours for my part-time job but I spend this day working on posts (one more finalized), figuring out some of the backend issues and doing a bit of social media promotion.  I think it's ok to be quiet over the holidays so I'll load up Social Pilot afterwards.

I studied a similar blog who focuses on a hobby that people are passionate about (mine is a more general topic) and I made notes on what they did.  First they built up an IG following and this was their sole focus.  They got featured by some larger IG feature sites and even had some photo contests to build up their following.  Only after they had a good following they went over to blogging - and expanded to two other social medias.  They use "ultimate" and "exclusive" and those other hyperbole to draw people in (and get featured through SEO), along with taking on hot topics, continuing the photo contests and they started an initiative that's really caught on in social media.  Another thing that makes it easy for them is that the writing is all about sharing their own evolution in the hobby which makes it personal and appealing (and easy to write).  Due to all these reasons I can see why they have grown very fast.  (They also have all day to work on their blog and social media - this is now their full-time occupation.)  Everything they learn is shared with their community and the photo contests allow them to give back by recognizing others in the community (along with some targeted giveaways).  Their monthly numbers are about triple to mine.

But due to the difference in our blogs - focus - topics, I am not doing the same thing and have to consider my own approach.  I did get some ideas however and know that the main things I want to do are:

- build a large portfolio
- get more backlinks from other sites
- write for others (guest posts, articles)
- rely less on social media
- get known locally (online and in person)
- create products to sell
- continue writing!! (my 100th post is coming up in about six weeks!!)
